  • Description

The Orion-Tr DC-DC charger is a professional DC to DC adaptive 3-stage charger. The smart series has built-in Bluetooth for remote monitoring and setup.

For use in dual battery systems in vehicles or on boats where the alternator and the start battery are used to charge the service battery. The Smart unit can be monitored and programmed via Bluetooth and can be remotely controlled via a remote on/off switch.

The Orion-Tr charger can be used in 12V systems and is suitable for both lead acid and lithium batteries. Models are available up to 400W and unlimited multiple units can be connected in parallel to increase output power.

Suitable for high temperatures up to 55°C with a full rated output up to 40°C.

Isolated or Non-Isolated?

If you use your chassis or body as a common ground on the vehicle then you need a Non-isolated charger.

The key difference between isolated and non-isolated Victron DC-DC chargers lies in the electrical connection they establish between the input and output sides of the charger.

  1. Isolated Victron DC-DC Charger: An isolated DC-DC charger electrically separates the input and output sides, creating a galvanic isolation between the two. This means there is no direct electrical connection between the input and output circuits. Isolated chargers are designed to provide complete electrical isolation, which offers several benefits:

    • Eliminates the risk of ground loops: Ground loops can occur when there are multiple paths to ground, leading to potential noise, interference, or electrical issues. Isolation prevents such problems.
    • Enhanced safety: Isolation helps protect sensitive electronic devices from electrical faults or surges that may occur on the input side.
    • Voltage adaptation: Isolated chargers can adapt to different input and output voltages, allowing them to charge batteries with different voltage requirements.
  2. Non-isolated Victron DC-DC Charger: In contrast, a non-isolated DC-DC charger does not establish electrical isolation between the input and output sides. The input and output circuits are directly connected, sharing a common ground reference. Non-isolated chargers are generally more straightforward in design and are suitable for applications where isolation is not required. Some characteristics of non-isolated chargers include:

    • Simplicity: Non-isolated chargers are usually simpler in terms of circuitry and design, which may result in lower costs.
    • Compactness: Due to the absence of isolation components, non-isolated chargers can be more compact and space-efficient.
    • Limited voltage adaptation: Non-isolated chargers typically operate at fixed input and output voltage levels, making them suitable for specific battery setups with matching voltage requirements.

The choice between an isolated and non-isolated Victron DC-DC charger depends on the specific requirements of your application. If you need electrical isolation, protection against ground loops, or voltage adaptability, an isolated charger would be the preferred option. On the other hand, if you have a simple setup without isolation needs and specific voltage requirements, a non-isolated charger can be a cost-effective and compact solution.
